Performing Arts Students Dazzle Spring Audiences

This spring, the Hilltop was filled with theater and music as our Middle and Upper Schools hosted their final band, choir, and theater performances of the school year.

Kicking off the spring season, the Upper School held its Theater Fest on Friday, May 3, with a cabaret. Students presented their work in the performing arts with original and published material that did not disappoint. 

On May 10 and 11, the Middle School Theater presented “The Story Store.” This thought-provoking show explored digital privacy, media influence, and how we craft the personas and stories we present to the world. It asked the critical question, What matters more: your PERFECT STORY™... or the truth?

On May 15, family and friends gathered in the Seldin Performing Arts Center to listen to the sweet sounds of St. Luke’s sixth through twelfth-grade chorale. Led by Choir Director Beth Woelflein, students performed repertoire ranging from Beyonce’s “Halo” to the profoundly inspiring piece “Ad Astra.” 

Each choir grew into its own this year, learning what makes choral singing different from other styles, how to listen and blend as an ensemble, and how timbre and singing style can vary between genres. The spring concert served as a beautiful way to celebrate the hard work and growth these singers have achieved this school year.

Wrapping up the incredible spring performances was St. Luke’s Spring Band Concert, which featured instrumental ensembles from grades five through 12. The students music-making and enthusiasm spilled over the stage from woodwinds to brass. Where else could you see Upper School Band Director Peter Valera conduct the "Harlem Nocturne" and "The Family Guy" theme in one swoop and watch Middle School Band Director Maggie Lauer transform musicians from "Hot Cross Buns" to "Uptown Funk?"
